Stephon Gilmore has been traded to the Carolina Panthers from the New England Patriots for a 2023 sixth-round pick. This came as a surprise to many as the Patriots announced that they were going to release Gilmore and he would have been able to sign anywhere he wanted to. This is a huge pickup for the Panthers and their defense gets even scarier than it already was. They are trying to compete with the Buccaneers for the NFC South and this could help them do just that.
This is a homecoming for Gilmore, as he was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina where the Panthers are building their new practice facility. Gilmore now has a fresh start with a new team where he can get back to playing at the level he was at in the 2019 season when he won Defensive Player of the Year.
I really like this pickup from the Panthers and this helps them out a lot since they will be missing Jaycee Horn for an extended period of time. For the Patriots, it does not make too much since. They could have gotten more out of the Panthers or another team for Gilmore since he can still play at a really high level. It is going to be interesting to see if the Panthers will be able to hang with the Buccaneers for the rest of the season and maybe even win the division.
Hopefully stays healthy
